Iowa Credit Union Foundation Launches 2012 FIB Scholarship Program

Des Moines, Iowa—The Iowa Credit Union Foundation (ICUF) is pleased to announce the start of its 2012 Family Involvement Board Scholarship program, which will award $5,750 in scholarships to six Iowa students.

Two different scholarship programs are available through the FIB Scholarship Program.

The first is a scholarship for high school seniors with a projected graduation date of 2012. The high school scholarship competition will award a total of $3,750. The first place prize is $1,500; second place is $1,000; third place is $750 and fourth place is $500.

The second program is the post- high school scholarship, which is open to any person who is entering or attending an accredited undergraduate, graduate or vocational program. This category will award two $1,000 scholarships.

Applicants must complete the entry form found on IowaCreditUnionFoundation.org and are required to answer the following question in no more than 500 words. Essay questions are designed to encourage learning about the credit union movement and its mission.

Unfortunately, many Americans try to avoid money matters altogether and deal with problems as they arise. However, even with some knowledge about managing finances, you can maintain a healthy financial life.

How are you educating yourself on personal finance and money management issues? Please include how you can utilize your credit union’s financial education expertise.

Judges will base their scores for the essay on originality, clarity, meaningful content, accurate presentation of facts, adherence to contest rules, spelling, grammar and punctuation. The deadline for applications is February 3, 2012. Winners will be notified via mail by April 2012, and the results will be posted on IowaCreditUnionFoundation.org.

“We are delighted to launch our 2012 FIB scholarship program,” said Marybeth Foster, Executive Director of ICUF. “It is particularly timely given the current economic situation and the greater financial difficulties students are experiencing in the pursuit of furthering their education. We thank the generous support of Iowa credit unions for helping us offer these scholarships.”

Founded in 1995 as the philanthropic arm of the Iowa Credit Union League, the Iowa Credit Union Foundation's (ICUF) primary focus is to eliminate poverty in the state of Iowa. ICUF seeks to carry out its mission to help Iowans build wealth, responsibility and independence through its various programs, grants and scholarships.
