Money Smart Week Essay Contest - Applications Due April 2
Do you have a Money Smart Kid? Students in grades 8-10 can now enter the seventh annual Money Smart Kid essay contest and compete for the chance to win $1,000 to help boost their college savings. The statewide essay contest is co-sponsored by the Iowa Bankers Association and ICUF. The student with the winning essay will be selected as Iowa's Money Smart Kid for 2013 and receive $1,000 toward college savings. Download the application.

Please promote this to your members and consider hosting an event for Money Smart Week. The dates are April 20-27. 


FREE Money Smart Conference in Des Moines April 20

You are invited to the FREE Money Smart Investor Conference and Money Fair on Saturday, April 20 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Olmsted Center, Drake University. Topics include:

  • Is the Stock Market Safe for Small Investors?
  • How to Save Yourself from Identity Theft and Cyber Hacking
  • How to Talk with Your Broker
  • How to Learn Mobile Banking

Stay for a free lunch to hear from a panel of experts and get tips on planning for college expenses, helping kids with money, harnessing the power of your 401(k), and more from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Browse the exhibits and get a free financial tracker from Kiplinger's and win other prizes.

Money Rules" Book by Bestselling Author & Finance Expert Jean Chatzky Available from NCUF    

Copies of the new book "Money Rules: The Simple Path to Lifelong Security" by bestselling personal finance author Jean Chatzky are now available from the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF). "Money Rules" contains a set of smart, actionable, engaging rules that if followed will allow readers to enjoy a lifetime of financial security and eliminate their stress about money. Read more.
Scholarship Opportunity  
ASIST Executive Women International Scholarship Program - Deadline Apr. 15

The Des Moines chapter of Executive Women International (EWI) has financial aid available for education through the ASIST (Adult Students in Scholastic Transition) program. Scholarship grants totaling $4,000 will be given this year. Applications are screened and then anonymously voted on by EWI Des Moines Chapter - Scholarship Committee members.     

The purpose of the scholarships is to provide assistance to adults (male and female) in the community who are in transitional situations or who are in need of financial aid in order to further their education. The recipients may select the career path of choice. Read more.   


Children's Miracle Network (CMN)  

First 2013 CU4Kids National Campaign Underway

Change a Child's Life is an easy-to-implement change drive and a way for credit unions to engage members in their fundraising efforts. The coin collection canisters are underwritten by CO-OP Financial Services and available to any credit union for no charge. CMN Hospitals suggests credit unions run the campaign for any eight weeks in March, April and May. Read more.


Creative Fundraising for CMN by Collins Community Credit Union

cmn new logo Collins Community Credit Union (CCCU) is running a campaign to raise money for CMN this month. Now through the end of March, for each CCCU account that signs up to receive eStatements, CCCU will donate $2 to the Children's Miracle Network. Every account a family has with the credit union that currently receives a paper statement in the mail is eligible. Read more.
