Iowa Eighth Grader Macy Evans Named 2013 Money Smart Kid  —

DES MOINES, IOWA  – Macy Evans, an eighth grader at Creston Middle School in Creston, Iowa, has won a statewide financial literacy essay contest and has been named Iowa’s 2013 Money Smart Kid.

Evans was recognized April 23 at a Money Smart Week kickoff event at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s West Des Moines office. At the event, Lori Ristau, vice president of marketing and communications at the Iowa Bankers Association, and Marybeth Foster, executive director of the Iowa Credit Union Foundation, presented Evans with an award honoring this accomplishment. Evans also received a $1,000 Certificate of Deposit, co-sponsored by the Iowa Bankers Association and Iowa Credit Union Foundation.

More than 140 students from across the state participated in the essay contest. To be eligible, students had to be in grades eighth through tenth and submit a 300-word essay. The essay described the difference between an investment and an expense. The top six essay finalists also participated in an interview with contest judges. From those finalists, Macy Evans was selected to be the 2013 Money Smart Kid.

“I am happy to see the number of essays that we received from students across the state this year,” said Kellie Masters, chair for the Money Smart Youth Outreach Committee. “It is amazing to think that there are so many kids from around the state who are going to make smarter financial decisions in their future, because of what they learned in writing this essay. We could all learn a lot from these students.”

“Even though I’m a teenager, I’m learning the difference between investments and expenses every day. I strive each day to make good ‘money smart’ choices when given the opportunity. My future depends on me and only I can embrace it with everything I’ve got,” wrote Evans in her award-winning essay.

Evans is the daughter of Rob and April Evans. As Iowa’s 2013 Money Smart Kid, Evans will serve as a spokesperson promoting financial education during Money Smart Week, April 20-27, in communities across the state. Throughout the week, more than 160 educational events will be hosted by about 200 community groups, financial institutions, government agencies, educational organizations and financial experts to help Iowans of all ages learn to better manage their personal finances.
