ICUF Updates
More Iowa Credit Unions Supporting Broke, Busted and Disgusted
Thank you to the Iowa credit unions who have provided or pledged support to help distribute Adam Carroll's Broke, Busted and Disgusted documentary to every Iowa high school. To date, 11 credit unions are participating in the sponsorship of the film with another nine credit unions committed to supporting. Thanks to this effort, 80 Iowa high schools have downloaded the film and are using it in either classroom or assembly settings and the feedback is pouring in. So far an estimated 10,000 students have seen the film. Here's what a few of the schools had to say:
  • "I am very appreciative that I was able to show this to my students for free. I am going to pass this on to our guidance counselor in hopes that it will be shown at our financial meeting next year."

  • "My students' response to the film was amazing. The truth of the situation was very powerful for them."
  • "No matter where you are in your curriculum or what you are teaching this is a must see for every high school student."

For the second year, ICUF will be supporting Money Smart Kids READ - a statewide program that will provide books to credit unions or libraries that host a local READ event during Money Smart Week, April 23-30.

For each event, designed for parents and their children in fourth grade or older, ICUF will provide 20 copies of books about entrepreneurship. Hosts will also be provided with promotional materials including a news release template and READ posters.

To host an event, credit unions are encouraged to utilize space on location or to partner with their local library.

For more information or to host a READ event, please contact Joanne Kuster, Money Smart Week Chair, at 515.991.5632. For more information regarding Money Smart Week, click here.

If your credit union hosts a READ event or takes part in other Money Smart Week activities, please share your photos and information about the event with us! We would love to help spread the word.
Volunteer to Help at 2016 Benefit Night
Each year at the annual Iowa Credit Union Convention, we celebrate the credit union philosophy of "people helping people" at ICUF Benefit Night. In 2015, ICUF raised more than $40,000 at the Iowa Credit Union Convention through sponsorships, raffle ticket sales, the silent auction, Benefit Night ticket sales and free will donations. To make this year's event better than ever, we need your help!  Contact Jaimie Miller at 800.860.6180 x3001 if you're interested in volunteering the evening of Sept. 15 during the Iowa Credit Union Convention in Cedar Rapids.

National Credit Union Foundation Releases 'Life Lessons - How Credit Unions Help'

Central Iowa Asset Building Community Development Forum April 26
Moving out of poverty is not just about increasing personal income - it also means creating opportunities for people to save and build wealth. Wealth is important.  It is the savings we need to pay for car repairs, college, or start a small business. It also represents assets, such as a home that can be leveraged in retirement, or to collateralize a small business loan. This conference will focus on asset development strategies such as affordable housing, small dollar lending and partnering/working with financial institutions, among other topics. Click here for more information and to register.
For questions regarding any information in the newsletter, please contact Jaimie Miller, ICUF Executive Director, at 515.221.3001.
ICUF was established in 1995. Its mission is to help Iowans build wealth, responsibility and independence, with the vision to eliminate poverty in the State of Iowa.
