Iowa Credit Union Foundation Newsletter - July 2009
Next deadline for scholarships is August 21
The next deadline for Foundation scholarships is Friday, August 21. Applications need to be received or postmarked by this date. Email and fax submissions are acceptable.
The AWJ Scholarship helps defray the cost of attending the 2010 CUNA Management School for a credit union employee.
The League President's Scholarship can be used towards any education event for credit unions, their employees, or chapters. This includes the 2009 Iowa Credit Union Convention, taking place September 23-25 in Des Moines. If your credit union is concerned about paying the cost to attend convention, apply for the League President's Scholarship.
Applications can be found at http://www.iowacreditunions.com/aspx/community_outreach/scholarships.aspx.
Small Credit Union Grants deadline is October 30, 2009
Does your credit union have less than $15 million in assets? If so, apply for a Small Credit Union Grant today! There are two grant programs for small credit unions.
- Small Credit Union Technology and Planning Grant
This grant is to be used for new technology costs to enhance your credit union's operation. The grant is NOT to be used for ongoing technology expenses, such as DSL costs.
- 2010 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) Grant
Are you or a board member interested in attending GAC, being held February 21-25, 2010 in Washington, D.C.? This conference is a great opportunity to learn more about legislative issues of importance to the credit union industry. In addition, ICUL schedules meetings with the Iowa Members of Congress in their Capitol Hill offices for all Iowa attendees. Registration for the conference will open later this fall.
The GAC grant is open to credit union managers and volunteer board members and covers the cost of airfare, registration and hotel costs. The grant does NOT cover expenses for a spouse or guest.

Credit Union Family Partnership Program to Expand
The Foundation received a $350,000 grant from the Iowa Division of Community Action Agencies to support the Credit Union Family Partnership IDA Program (CUFPIP).
An IDA or Individual Development Account is a matched savings account, where savings from a participant's earnings are matched with funds from the Iowa Credit Union Foundation.
Under the new state grant, participants may earn up to 300 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, set each year by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In addition, families must live in a county declared as a disaster area by FEMA in 2008. Some 85 counties in Iowa were so designated by President Bush.
300 percent of Federal Poverty for 2009
Persons in Family or Household
48 Contiguous States and D.C.
For each additional person, add $11,220.
Savers can use the IDA funds to buy a first home, start or expand a small business, pay for postsecondary education or job training, modify a home or vehicle if they have a disability, make improvements to a primary residence which increase the tax basis of the property, or purchase a vehicle if they do not currently own one.
Credit unions not already involved in CUFPIP and interested in becoming involved should watch for a Request for Proposals to be released by the Foundation. The RFP outlines the role and responsibilities for credit unions in the program. A conference call will be held to answer questions about the program and the RFP.
Help Support the 2009 Foundation Silent Auction and Benefit Night
The Foundation will host its annual silent auction during the 2009 Iowa Credit Union Convention in an effort to raise funds for Foundation programs and services that benefit your credit union, staff and members. This year's auction will be held at the Polk County Convention Complex.
NEW this year, please note that the silent auction will only be open for one day, Thursday, September 24. This new process will allow those who purchase items to pick them up on Friday morning and ensure that all items are delivered to their respectful owners prior to hotel check-out.
If you are interested in donating an item or items, please email firstname.lastname@example.org by August 14. Please include a description of the item so that we can plan space accordingly as Convention approaches.
We also hope you will join us for the annual Foundation Benefit Night being held at AllPlay, September 24 at 8 p.m. Enjoy billiards, mini-bowling, arcade games AND a rock climbing challenge against our own Foundation President, Jenny Lorenz. The band, Monkey Monkey Monkey, featuring Mark Leeper of River Valley Credit Union, will also provide musical entertainment.
Tickets are $40 and must be purchased independently from your Convention registration package. Be sure to register online by August 14 to secure the early bird Convention rate!
Credit Union for Kids Golf Outing August 10 at TPC Deere Run
By Kris Lundquist, The Family Credit Union
The 13th Annual Credit Union for Kids Golf Outing is scheduled for Monday, August 10 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, IL. Our outing traditionally does extremely well as we include both the Illinois and Iowa credit unions in the Quad Cities area. This year we have changed the venue to a premier golf course - TPC Deere Run - the very course that just hosted the televised PGA Tournament, the John Deere Classic. It will be a real plus for the golfers out there! We want to include more golfers from other areas of the state.
Deadline for registration is August 3rd.
